In our house, on the surface, it looks like any other crazy, happy, messy house where twin boys live. But if you look a little closer you will find a supply of Benadryl, epi pens, and sunflower butter instead of peanut butter.

I listen to my singleton counterparts talk about sleep deprivation, illness, doctor’s appointments, and guilt. I stay silent. I listen and I commiserate. I never let on that I think you have it easy. I never let on that I am jealous of the time you have with your one baby. I spent months in a sleep deprived haze and we did it alone.

I have 4-year-old twin boys. Both are your typical little boys. Dirt, bugs and mud excite of them. They look identical, but they are two completely different boys. This is an important distinction to make. Most times they are lumped together as the twins, Alex and Ben. For this reason, I don’t dress them in identical outfits, and nothing illustrates that more than when we went to the shoe store last week.

I was hiding from my children yesterday when my phone rang. It was a dear friend and fellow mother. I answered and she seemed sad. I asked her what was wrong and she replied, “I’m afraid I’m ruining my children.”. I assured her we are all ruining our children, that this is parenting. In fact, they will be in therapy and may develop some weird sexual fetishes.
